Jordyn Redwood and Real Life in Fiction

Hi all. Dana here. I am so happy to have Jordyn Redwood with me here today. Jordyn is a fellow Love Inspired Suspense author, and I have to tell you, she is so much fun, and her writing is phenomenal.

Thanks so much for hosting me, Dana. I’m honored to be part of your blog today.

Normally, my novels are heavily researched. I LOVE research and can get easily sidetracked by looking up information for one tiny fact. How long does it take hypothermia to set in in thirty degree weather? The next time I look at the clock it’s two hours later and I’m deep into outlining a book on a research expedition to the South Pole. Never mind that my current project has nothing to do with the South Pole.

Seriously—writing for me is an outlet for all the research I do.

Fractured Memory is different. This novel was contracted through the Love Inspired Blurb to Book contest. When I made it to the third round of the contest we had to write and edit the book in about eight weeks. I didn’t have time for hours and hours of research.

I had to write what I know. I had to write about me.

Julia Galloway is a girl after my own heart. I did start my nursing career in adult centered care working my first three years in an adult ICU and a community ER. While in the ER, I found that I really didn’t like taking care of adult patients. It seemed like they never wanted to get better even when they were better!

Kids are different . . . so different. They are honest about how they are feeling. When they’re better, they act well, and want to leave the hospital to enjoy life. Adults could learn so much from pediatric patients.

I knew I was in trouble in the adult realm when I began to negotiate with my coworkers to take care of all the pediatric patients. It went something like this, “I get everyone under twenty-one. All of you get everyone over fifty. Everyone in the middle is up for grabs.”

You might think this is the most ridiculous bargain ever but my coworkers loved it because they didn’t like taking care of kids. It was a really nice set up except the trouble was there were many more adults then pediatric patients.

That’s when I realized there were whole hospitals that did nothing but take care of children. I got a job in the Pediatric ICU at a major children’s hospital where I was living at the time and have never looked back sense.

Julia Galloway has my heart for kids—some of the most vulnerable patients there are. When no one speaks up for them, perhaps not even their parents, it’s my job to advocate for them. That’s where Julia gets her feistiness—because she’s used to speaking up for those that don’t have a voice.

Just like me.
